Concerning your question, we can let you know that it shouldn’t be a problem travelling the iron ore train as a woman. In the passenger part of the train, there will be women for sure (although we were not there, but saw some getting on and off), so you won’t be “alone”. In general, Mauritanian men are very friendly and are not interested in trouble/hassle and if you have lots of travel experience and therefore know how to act (or better NOT to act), you’ll be fine.

I loved every moment of it. It is my dream to do this as well and I think it may actually happen in a few weeks. I found this post from the Thorntree forum. I want to ride on the top of the train, and I will be traveling alone. Do you think that would be ok for a woman going alone, if I don’t have my own car? I have a ton of travel experience, but I guess I am just wondering about when it gets dark and if anyone will hassle me. I’m thinking of those situations when I’m the only woman in a space full of men who aren’t used to being around women.
ps crying DOES help sometimes, as much as I hate it to come to that point!
