I love Paris in the spring time, but I must say, I love Paris in the fall even more. The smell, the colours and most of all the atmosphere is extraordinary. Last autumn was a hard time due to personal issues, and I felt the need to get a way from the crowds. A visit to lesser known attractions in the city was what I was after. And since cemeteries are a place of comfort and peace for me, Paris’ largest cemetery Père Lachaise was on my list.

Welcome To The Garden Of Pere Lachaise Cemetery.

The world’s most visited cemetery opened in 1804. Père Lachaise is notable for being the first garden cemetery. Finally someone realised, that cemeteries don’t only need to be a place of sorrow, but comfort and peace.

The main attractions at Père Lachaise lie six feet under though: Edith Piaf, Jim Morrison, Frédéric Chopin, Yves Montand, Oscar Wilde, Maria Callas, Georges Bizet and many other celebrities have found their resting place here. Most visitors come here to find at least one of the mentioned graves, I didn’t care much about that. I rather enjoyed the sheer aesthetic beauty of the cemetery.
